Intensive Workshops

The three-day workshops held by Arbeitsgruppe Medizindidaktik (Dept. of Medical Education) build on preparation with the workbooks presented here. In three days they systematically convey the required practical skills in examination and diagnosis in small groups with the aid of live demonstrations and with a large share of hands-on practice. They are held in cooperation with the Marburger Bund Stiftung.

Elementary Abdominal Ultrasound Intensive Workshop

All course participants receive the appropriate workbook with specific recommendations for preparatory exercises when they register. The course concept offers a lively mix of methods. The modules consist of brief but memorable live demonstrations (about 15-20 minutes), with the focus on subsequent longer practical ultrasound exercises (each about 60-90 minutes). These exercises are conducted in small groups of at most 5 participants per workplace and instructor. The participants are guided by instructors with specific educational and specialty training who repeatedly involve the course participants actively in the learning process. Additional drawing exercises depicting the standard imaging planes consolidate and reinforce the students' knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.

A workbook specifically designed for our courses ("Ultrasound Teaching Manual," published by Georg Thieme Verlag, 7th edition 2012, €24.99) is available for optimum preparation for the course. Further details about dates, costs, registration, etc. are available here.

Color-coded Duplex Sonography Intensive Workshop

The three-day interdisciplinary elementary course in color-coded duplex sonography designed according to German KBV guidelines offers residents and specialists the perfect introduction to the "world of colorful images." This workshop is certified by the State Medical Association of North Rhine Westphalia for 28 CME points in category C.

All of the course content is taught according to modern educational criteria in short, easily manageable modules. Brief but memorable live demonstrations on transducer handling and ultrasound images are followed by practical exercises (each 60-90 minutes) conducted in small groups of at most 5 participants per workplace and instructor. After a brief overview of common pathologic findings, quiz questions and additional drawing exercises depicting typical flow profiles consolidate the course material and maximize retention.

Chest X-Ray Intensive Workshop

Systematic diagnostic interpretation of chest radiographs

Radiographs of the chest are among the most common examinations, and even non-radiologists have to deal with them on night shifts or in everyday clinical practice. This three-day intensive workshop is intended for medical students in practical training or residents who would like to systematically familiarize themselves with the diagnostic interpretation of conventional chest radiographs. This workshop is certified by the State Medical Association of North Rhine Westphalia for 28 CME points in category C.

Brief classroom presentations introduce specific subtopics. Next all the participants form pairs and, in rotation, evaluate case studies on fluorescent screens. They then record their findings for each of these sample images on individual routing slips. These tentative diagnoses are then digitally recorded with the aid of individual radio transmitters in an interactive classroom session. In the final phase of the workshop, the solutions to the quiz images are presented. This provides an opportunity for an in depth discussion with the course instructor about disorders that may have to be considered in a differential diagnosis.
